Understanding the ROLES

CoS or Founder's Associate
— what does your organisation need?

Both roles sit close to the top — but they serve different purposes.
We help you figure out which one fits your stage, your structure, and your leadership style.

Chief of Staff

Strategic right hand to the C-level
The CoS operates with a broad mandate — managing cross-functional initiatives, enabling the leadership team, and ensuring the C-level members' time and focus go where they matter most. They often act as the connective tissue of the organisation.

Best for:
Organisations of 25+ people with an established leadership team
Strategy
Alignment
Stakeholder Mgmt

Founder's Associate

High-potential generalist next to the founders
The FA is a fast-learning generalist who works directly with the founder(s) — juggling strategic and operational topics, moving fast, and taking on real responsibility from day one.

Best for:
Early-stage startups that need a trusted second brain (+ extra hands) next to the founder
Execution
Speed
Founder Proximity

Why choose Julia Reis Consulting
as your recruiting partner

There are a lot of recruiters out there.
Here's what sets us apart — and has earned us a 4.97/5 rating.
We bring our consultant mindset to recruiting
Many searches start vague and stay vague. Ours don't. Before we search, we align on (and challenge) what the role needs to deliver - scope, success criteria, your organisational context. A well-defined role is half the hire.
We move fast - without cutting corners.
Time kills hiring processes. We run a tight, transparent process - so you always know where things stand, and strong candidates don't drop off because of slow feedback loops. Average time-to-hire: 6–10 weeks.
We actually know these roles.
We've spent years working with and inside organisations and leadership teams as "fractional" CoS and consultants. We don't just fill these roles - we understand them. That changes the quality of every conversation we have with candidates on your behalf.
You can rely on us. Fully.
We treat every search as if it were our own hire.
That means honest feedback, even when it's uncomfortable - and staying involved until the role is truly filled, not just signed.

FAQ

What's the difference between a Chief of Staff and a Founder's Associate?

Both roles support founders directly, but they differ in seniority, scope and the kind of leverage they create.

A Founder's Associate is typically an early-career generalist who takes tasks off the founders' plate and keeps things moving. They thrive in high-ambiguity environments, handling everything from research and hiring coordination to meeting prep and internal ops. It's a high-velocity, execution-heavy role — and a great launchpad for a career in operations or strategy.

A Chief of Staff is a more senior, strategic partner who amplifies leadership impact at the organisational level. Rather than executing individual tasks, they translate vision into action, drive cross-functional alignment, run OKR cycles and own strategic initiatives. They are deeply trusted by the founder and leadership team, often operating behind the scenes to clear noise and keep priorities on track.

Put simply: a Founder's Associate helps you scale yourself — a Chief of Staff helps you scale the company.

Most companies bring on a Founder's Associate at pre-Seed to Series A stage, and transition to a Chief of Staff as complexity grows and the founder's bandwidth becomes a strategic bottleneck rather than an operational one.

👉 Find out more about the differences between a Chief of Staff and Founder's Associate.

We help you determine which role fits your organisation best in our initial call and if needed a pre-search deep-dive session.

What kinds of companies do you typically work with?

We mostly work with tech-driven companies between 5 and 300 employees — typically at a growth or reorganisation stage where hiring is business-critical but internal People & Culture capacity is limited. This includes start-ups, scale-ups, company builders and VCs but also forward-thinking SMEs.

Due to our team's earlier professional background, we also regularly support nonprofit organisations in their hiring.

Geographically speaking we are focused on Germany and Austria when it comes to hiring.

How long does a typical search take?

Our average time-to-hire is 6–10 weeks. We run a tight, transparent process — so you always know where things stand, and strong candidates don't drop off because of slow feedback loops. In most cases, you will be able to interview your first potential candidates within 10 to 20 days of kicking-off your search with us.

But honestly, the time-to-hire not only depends on us and the candidate market but also on your responsiveness and collaboration style. When it all matches, we've have also been able to hire in under four weeks in selected cases.

What does the process look like from our side?

After an initial deep-dive profile briefing, we handle everything from job postings and candidate outreach to screening and interview coordination. You'll receive a shortlist of pre-vetted candidates with written assessments, and we support you through the final interviews and offer stage.

If you book our Full Package (see above) we can also support you in pre-search role design, setting up your overall assessment process and onboarding after your hire has started.

What makes your approach different from other recruiters?

A few things. We bring our consultant mindset to recruiting — every search starts with a detailed briefing session in which we aim to fully understand your context and the required role profile as well as aligning on all other relevant aspects of our collaboration. We then move fast without cutting corners (average time-to-hire: 6–10 weeks). But: we always prioritise candidate quality over sheer speed.

And because we've spent years working inside and with organisations and leadership teams as fractional Chiefs of Staff, we understand these entrepreneurial roles at a depth most recruiters don't.

We treat every search as if it were our own hire — which also means having honest discussions about the right candidate with you, even if this might lead to extra work for us.

What if the hire doesn't work out?

We include a 90-day onboarding check-in to catch issues early. If the placement doesn't work out within a defined period, we offer a replacement search — specifics are shared during our initial conversation.
